How we do it

Whole-school routines, decided once and done by everyone

Each one turns a routine every school has into short, written decisions, so every adult does it the same way and every pupil knows what to expect. Inside each one, choose primary, secondary or special to see examples that fit your school.

Mobile phones. In England, schools must now have regard to the government’s guidance that schools are phone-free by default, and Ofsted looks at how well it is put into practice. Write how you do it →

Start of the day

From the gates opening to the first lesson.

Lessons

The routines that protect learning time in every classroom.

Around the school

Corridors, breaks, lunch and assemblies: the times between lessons.

Expectations

The rules that only work when every adult applies them in the same way.

How it works

  1. Choose a routine. Start with the one that varies most between classrooms, or the one your school is launching next.
  2. Write your decisions. One sentence for each row. Members also see the questions to consider, what usually goes wrong and a worked example for every row.
  3. Test it before you launch. Five quick tests, including the new teacher test and the hardest pupil test, and feedback on any decision that is still vague.
  4. Launch it and check it. Download it for staff in Word or Google Docs, share it with colleagues, and use the QA sheet so it is checked every week.
