What this tool is for

The Leadership Focus Triad helps leaders choose a small, deliberate focus for their leadership development.

Instead of trying to work on everything at once, it supports leaders to build a balanced focus that strengthens:

• reliability in day-to-day practice
• impact through others
• sustainability over time

It can be used independently or as part of coaching. It creates clarity without prescribing what a leader must do.

How the Leadership Focus Triad works

The Leadership Focus Triad guides leaders to select three behaviours:

• Core behaviour, creates reliability and consistency, especially under pressure.
• Enabling behaviour, helps others act with clarity and confidence, reducing dependency and building capacity beyond the individual.
• Sustaining behaviour, protects improvement over time so progress does not fade once attention shifts. It often begins as awareness and early habit formation before becoming an area of deliberate practice. The aim is focus, not overload.

These categories are not a hierarchy. They describe how behaviours function in practice.

Suggestions are shaped by the leader’s role and the challenge they are currently facing. They are prompts for judgement, not instructions. The final choice always sits with the leader.

How this fits alongside school-wide behaviour focus

The Leadership Focus Triad is different from a school or trust-wide leadership behaviour focus:

• School-wide focus sets shared expectations across an organisation.
• Personal focus supports individual leaders to develop deliberately within that context.

Both sit within the same Leadership Cycle and reinforce one another.
