S7. Communicate Often – Coach and Practice
This behaviour develops a leader’s ability to keep staff informed, aligned, and motivated through deliberate, consistent communication.

Behaviour focus
Building transparent communication routines that create trust, reduce uncertainty, and keep everyone connected to purpose.

Purpose
To ensure staff always know what is happening, why it matters, and how their work contributes to the wider mission.
| Action Steps | Key Questions | Practice |
| Audit communication channels. | Where does confusion or duplication occur? | Ask the leader to map all communication routes in their area. Practise simplifying and streamlining them. |
| Establish rhythm and predictability. | How can people know when and where to expect updates? | Rehearse announcing a new communication rhythm (e.g. weekly bulletin or short video update). Practise tone and brevity. |
| Communicate with clarity and empathy. | How will your words land with different audiences? | Practise explaining a difficult change to staff using clear, honest language. Receive feedback on tone. |
| Close feedback loops. | How will you show that you listen and act on input? | Practise responding to feedback publicly: “You told us X, so we’ve done Y.” Review clarity and warmth of delivery. |
